I'm aware that a lot of people wouldn't agree, but I don't think it's a bad thing to be predictable if it's done in the right way!
Everyone knows that Janelle Monae lives her life in black and white, and her hair is forever pulled up into a perfect pompadour. You always know she'll arrive in her usual colors (& maybe a bow tie) but you never quite know how she's going to do it. I'm actually amazed by how long she's kept this up!

Sometimes she goes with suits slacks and heels in a variety of cuts and textures, and a bold lip.

Other times she keeps it monochrome, only rocking one color from head to toe.

On stage she's constant: Tux shirt, bow tie, oxfords, and the occasional suit or cape.
I've also seen her wear red oxfords, a navy and a gray suit, a plaid tie, etc...but she generally sticks to her polished, gender bending, sometimes equestrian, void of color style. It works! I think having this "uniform" challenges her imagination and she's doing great so far..
As for her critics..people are never happy. If she always changed then she would be marked inconsistent and people would question what her style was. At least she knows what she likes and is sticking to it!
Oh and adorable stylist Brad Goreski is known for always rocking his bow tie and glasses:

In fact, because of his style and how recognizable he is, he went from being Rachel Zoe's assistant to scoring his own show on Bravo. Goes to show you, repetitiveness can be a very good thing!
