I have to get this off my chest:

Nothing is more unattractive than someone who thinks that the world revolves around them. You know those people who think they can be hurtful and rude because in their mind they're the sh*t and can do/say whatever they want? Those people who tear others down so that they can build themselves up? Those people who think that everyone in the world wants a piece of what they've got? Yeah I can't stand those people. Now don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with being confident. To me confidence is looking in the mirror and smiling because you like what you see. It's knowing that you deserve the best because you feel your best. It's being humble because you know don't have to prove anything to anyone.

Cockiness means you feel little so you put on a giant mask...........or you're just delusional.

So take off that mask, shake the delusion, love yourself, and be confident instead!

*sidenote: taking pictures of yourself does not make you cocky! lol just throwing it out there for my fellow bloggers!*

This weekend I went out for the first time in a lonnnnng time.....and it was perfect! I was pretty hesitant to go, because the whole reason I stopped partying/clubbing was to avoid drama but it went pretty smooth and I felt great in my new dress!

College: Is it worth it?

I quietly ask myself this question every day. Is all this worth it? Then, as quickly as the thought surfaces, I push it out of my head because I literally don't have a choice. Any African kid knows that for us college is mandatory. From the day you're born you are prepped by your parents to become an engineer or "medical doc-tah". Don't you dare suggest anything else! Besides that, if I want to be guaranteed a well paying job college is the way to go. And according to everyone (counselors, parents, advisers) the real world is a scary place without a well paying job. But honestly......................college is a pretty scary place.

The deadlines, the papers, the projects, the exams, and all with little help from your professors. I mean, when a professor has 1,000 students in one lecture hall it's pretty hard for them to teach effectively. Then you have the interning/volunteering you have to do for experience, and the job you have to get to pay your never ending stream of bills. Because you're so busy, your diet consists of various flavors of Ramen noodles (the sqaure shaped ones, not cup noodles!), energy drinks, and plenty of fast food/quick unhealthy snacks. Oh and let's not forget the fact that the only way to graduate in four years and keep your tuition from skyrocketing (at least for me) is to take nineteen credits a semester. Yeahhhh, did that freshman year, and after seeing my grades......... I'm never doing it again. So say hello to a future fifth year senior. In college you can't take a single misstep. One wrong decision and you're a year behind. A year behind means you take more loans. The more loans you rack up, the more of your well-paid-job-money goes to paying it back. It's like a twisted retelling of If You Give a Mouse a Cookie!

And I've made plenty....

Whew! Hopefully I haven't scared any prospective college students away! Yes there's stress, lack of sleep, and unhealthy eating habits, but I've recently found that college gets better when you love what you're studying. The classes I do stellar in all deal with psychology. Especially abnormal psych and behavior analysis..which happen to be my major and minor. The classes get harder, but you work harder because you love it. Trust me when I say Freshman and Sophomore year is full of stupid classes used as a ploy to "weed weak people out". Just push through and pick the right major, you'll enjoy going to class a lot more after that. The freedom is also nice (once again shout out to my fellow African kids who weren't allowed to do anything but stay in their bedrooms and study!). But remember, it's easily abused so be careful what you decide to experiment with/try in college. Some things could really hurt you, and not just physically. Anyway, I've learned a lot about myself in college. I've learned what I'm interested in, I've picked up effective study habits, I've learned a LOT about people, and I'm still learning to work effectively under pressure. Oh and I also learned how to "dance". And by dance I mean dipping on beat and gyrating my hips to the latest club bangers while throwing my hands up and shouting out "Ayyyyyyyye!". I should seriously record myself one day haha.

Weeeeeellllp, to whoever took the time to read my rant turned advice giving randomness I appreciate you. I'm staying up all night writing papers so this post means a lot right now.... Thanks!

And to answer the question:

Is college worth it?

Yes, go to school kids.
If not for the prospect of a good job, go for the experience!

& if you're African you might as well go willingly, your parents will make you go anyway!

If you get bored with your collars I suggest covering them with lace or of course studding them! Either one is super easy. For my collar above I used scissors to round the tips and used my sewing machine to attach the lace. It literally takes 15 min and it's a cheap way to change things up.

So this past week or so has been a downer. School is harder, people are meaner, and things just weren't working out. Now I'm back on track and luckily I have some time to blog, yay! My day started out fine. I posted on the blog and went to my usual class, then my friend Rachel invited me and my other friend Kayti to an indoor track meet. Everything was fine and dandy...

..UNTIL AN OLD MAN LOOKED UP MY SKIRT.

This skinny old man working the event stared at us with his eyes wide open, like bugged out. I thought he was creepy so I turned around when he walked past....and he was bent over, pretending to pick something up, looking up into my skirt!! I know this happens to a lot of girls so I "shouldn't be so frazzled"...but I am! I feel so disrespected.

Six alternatives to going to the club

As a college student, weekend after weekend I'm faced with the same dilemma: to party or not to party? And as of late, I pretty much always say nay. Don't get me wrong, it's fun! The people, the dancing, the music, it's great...in moderation.

We all know about the obligatory glamour shots before every party haha

When partying gets excessive it gets redundant, and there always seems to be drama. This may not be the case for everyone, but for anyone who's interested here are some alternative ways to spend your Saturday nights when you're not feeling the club:

1. Study/Do Homework

Your friends may call you "lame" or "square" but good grades feel a whooooole lot better than hangovers and blistered feet (from heels).

2. Play the Sims

Thanks to my Sims 3: Nightlife expansion pack (thanks Rachel!) I've spent quite a few Saturday nights building families and having them wreak nighttime havoc in their simulated world. I haven't met a single person who doesn't love playing the Sims!

3. Go to the movies/Rent a movie
I love watching movies! Going to the movie theater is always a cool experience, but I actually prefer staying in and watching indie movies. Those (and animated movies haha) seem to have the most heart.

4. Cook dinner with friends
Its super fun getting together and cooking dinner with your friends. It's actually a lot more fun than you'd think! But I'd suggest that only helping hands get to grab a plate just to avoid any moochers!

5. Go bowling
I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a terrible bowler. I always dread going, but once I get there I get super competitive!

6. Host a game night
I'm not into board games, but once my friends and I get into truth or dare (or "never have I ever") we end up playing for hours. Also, dance games on the wii or PS3 are always fun!

Hey everyone! School's in session which means less blogging *sigh* but here's what I've been up to these past few days:

1. My boyfriend and I made vision boards:

I was inspired by Nic and LBS to make a vision board; a visual representation of my goals for the year. This was a great activity, it really helps you sit down and think plus we had so much fun making them! When you're done you're supposed to hang it up somewhere super visible so I thought there'd be no better place than my closet...I go in there every day!

2. I only took one outfit picture:

I've been feeling quite blahh about my appearance lately..couldn't quite seem to get it right this week. This is the only outfit I somewhat felt good in. Oh and you may be wondering about my blacked out eyes. I did it, not for me, but for you guys...because if you would have seen the horror that is my sleepy eyes it would have been quite a fright!

3. I made some changes to the blog:

Not very big changes, I moved some things around, added some cuuurvvvee, bought a domain name (http://www.the-lion-kingdom.com/), and made a new header using the picture that Julie of The Cherry on Top drew for me (thanks again!!).

4. I made an online shop:

There's not much on there yet, but I'll be making some products very soon! Maybe I'll even whip up a few bow ties...

One pair of shorts, Four ways

I paid $20 for these shorts at Urban Outfitters and I haven't worn them out yet. To me, that means I wasted money..and $20 is a lot of money!

Anyway, I decided to do something semi-useful with my time and plan a few outfits around these shorts...here's what I came up with:

3. The club? I think so!

"Is that your real hair?"

I don't mind when people ask me if my hair is real.....most of the time. Sometimes, I do. Most people ask me politely because they want to know what type of hair I use so that they can use it themselves. That's cool with me! What I don't like is the people who ask me rudely, people who are just being nosy, and people who TOUCH MY HAIR. My God I can't stand it when people touch my hair. Anyway, here are my hair pet peeves explained:

The rudeness:

I was at Walmart shopping and a lady literally charged at me. She ran up and peered up at my hair, eyes squinted and all. Then she told me "this is going to be a rude question". I said "What's up?". And she asked me if my hair was real. I laughed and told her no, and that she didn't ask a rude question, but she insisted that if she was asked she would have flipped. I didn't think it was rude, but the fact that she thought it was rude and still asked....*sigggghhhhhh*

The nosy Nancys:

In my mind, if someone who I know doesn't wear weaves and never will asks if mine is real, I take it as just being plain nosy...and that's never good! How does figuring out if my hair is real or fake help you? This doesn't happen often..only twice actually..but it was slightly annoying both times.

The people who touch my hair:

I had just met a girl who seemed like a really nice, polite person...but my opinion changed the minute she put her fingers all up in my hair, asking me if it was real. NO. Nonononononono. I wear a half wig, so blending is super important. You move one hair and you're ruining the feng-shui of my 'do. You're leaving me open and vulnerable. You're exposing me to the dangers of my wig line being revealed by the breeze! To make matters worse, she is one of those people who doesn't and will never wear weave. She just...ugh, she just stirred my spirit.

Welp those are just some hair pet peeves of mine...don't mind me! I just had to get that off my chest. I really don't mind questions or comments in general..just these 3 scenarios above I can't stand!

I love Solange's hair...!

I'd be lying if I said she wasn't the reason for my decision to go BIG and CURLY. Her style is amazing, I haven't quite mastered mixing prints yet but if I ever try it it'll be because of Solange. What I love the most about her (besides her music) is her attitude. She could easily be a "diva" but she chooses to be herself and fights her way out of any box people try to place her in.

This is how I've felt the whole day today:

Just blahhhhh.

I'm not in the spirit. I know the "reason for the season" but it's kind of hard to get into it when everyone is more concerned with bragging about the gifts and things they're going to receive, instead of the time they'll spend with their family and the joy of the holiday. I mean, is it just me or does Christmas feel extra commercialized this year? It always is, but this year it just feels like Christmas' magic is being shrouded by price tags. All I want for Christmas is you...and a Nintendo 3DS, some shoes, and Mariah Carey in a sexy outfit?? I know that Macy's probably paid Justin Bieber a hefty sum to do this video, but geez.

Oh, and my Grinchiness might also be due to the fact that I was given an ultimatum by the church I worked at: "work Christmas Eve and Christmas or be let go". Now, the church is in Lawrence and my family is in Wichita....I wanted to spend this time with them for the holidays so I chose to be let go. How ironic right?

Anyway, I'll admit I'm being a Grinch this Christmas, but hopefully I'll be more in the spirit after going to church tomorrow!

I was so ecstatic that as soon as I got home I changed my entire outfit to match my boots, then headed out to see The Adventures of Tintin with my siblings:

Now on to the movie...

I LOVED it! I'm such a fan of the animated series that I watch all the episodes over and over again multiple times a year (I never read the comics sadly). The animation and effects were out of this world, and in terms of story Spielberg stayed true to what Tintin is all about. And what is Tintin all about? Basically a young man works as a reporter and his unyielding curiosity ends up getting him in heaps of trouble and his life endangered time and time again.

And here is my 10 year old brother's review of the movie for any kids out there-

If you're like me and you're still trying to find your own personal style run to your nearest Urban Outfitters and grab Amanda Brooks' I Love Your Style! I snagged this book for $5 on clearance and it's the best $5 I've spent in a while. The writing is descriptive yet straight forward, and the author lets the photographs do most of the talking which, for a style book, is great! The book is organized by style: classic, minimal, bohemian, street, vintage, etc. It describes each style, shows you examples of people wearing the style, what pieces you need to get the look, and what works for your body type. All throughout the book, Brooks' gives you tips on how to choose and obtain your own personal style...tips that I've definitely been using! Oh and here are some sample pages (these are examples of the more picture heavy parts):

The trouble with poisonous friendships...

In high school I never went out, never went to sleepovers, never went over friends' houses, and I was fine with that! But I do admit that it made it hard to hold meaningful, long term friendships with people. Now that I attend college in another city, friends have kind of taken the place of family in the way you live with them, have fun with them, and confide in them. It's super important to be close to good people who will support you because college, with all of it's fun times, is full of rough spots (finances and grades being the roughest).

I have met a few people in college that I know I can trust, and that I would support no matter what, but other than those few I have met soooo many poisonous people. These are people who are supposed to make you happy but instead, always make you feel terrible. I'm the type who will drop all my "friends" if it meant keeping my pride, so if I see any sign of snake-like tendencies I pretty much cut the person off cold turkey...but I know some people find that hard to do. So, I'm going to try my best to tell you guys how to spot a bad friend, and more importantly, how to get rid of them!:

How to spot a bad "friend":

Your friend only seems to want you around when it's convenient for them

An example of this is a friend who never calls you unless they want to go shopping or out to eat...and they don't have a car but you do (meaning they want a ride). However, when you just want to hang out at home they never seem to answer the phone.

Your friend loves putting you down/Jealousy

This is a friend who will tell you that your hair looks "off", your outfit is missing something, and just constantly take jabs at your appearance under the pretense of being honest or "just joking".
It's one thing to be honest with a friend who asks, but it's another thing to be vicious for no reason, and it's worst to bring someone down out of jealousy.

Your friend is never there for you, but expects you to be there for them

An example of this is a friend who never wants to listen to you when you're feeling down..or even when you have good news to share, but when they have the slightest problem they expect you to be their own personal Dr.Phil.

Your friend takes your kindness for weakness

This is someone who you lend money to, and they take forever and a day to pay it back...or sometimes...never
A person who will eat like a king at your house/apartment, but never offers you anything when you're over their's
A person who will use you for rides and never offer to pay gas money, and never gives you rides in return if they can

How to get rid of bad "friends":

Try talking it out

I do admit I get rid of people without talking it out first, but that's not the best solution. Sometimes your friend doesn't know what they're doing is hurting you. A good friend will take what you say into consideration and treat you better after a nice talk.

Keep conversations dry and to a minimum

For the friends who don't change after a talk, start to dump them (slowly). Use the infamous "k." text on them, stop confiding in them, and don't initiate conversation.

When they call to hang out, tell them you're busy

They want to go to the mall on Saturday? Tell them you have to catch up on some reading, or that you already made plans with someone else...or, that you just don't feel like going. They will eventually get the hint.

Don't back down

I know it's tempting to start hanging out with a bad friend who tells you "you never hang out with me anymore", "hey stranger", etc..but just keep saying you're really busy. Trust me, it's better to hurt their feelings a little, than to continue on in an unhealthy relationship.

I realize this is somewhat of a random post, but it was a subject I had to speak on!

The trouble with jeans...

I feel like every girl I know has trouble with the fit of their jeans. They're always snug all down the leg, but suuuuper loose and saggy at the waist:

these are highwaisted but they kept sliding down

Fit is very important, and I feel less put together when I wear pants that don't fit me just right. At the same time when I really need something (colored jeans) I usually just give up. I don't know who jeans are made for...but they're definitely not made for girls with even the slightest bit of curve!

Question: Do you guys have problems with the fit of your jeans? And if so, what store do you find jeans that fit just right?

1. I freaking LOVE Misfits!!!!

I was super bummed when Robert Sheehan left the show, but honestly this new character Rudy fits in just fine. Plus this season has been nuts (in a good way), I'll be so sad when it ends...

You know what? I wish I could live in Britain. All the British fashion bogs I read always match my style, or at least the style I'd love to obtain, I find myself drawn to online shops that cater to the UK, and British shows are always my favorite! I believe my heart is in the UK and my soul is in NY...if I could live my life bouncing between those two places I'd be one happy happy gal!

2. I pose so awkwardly

As soon as the camera is pointed in my direction my right hand gets a mind of it's own and eases on up to my hip, then a smile creeps across my face, and my toes do "the pigeon". It's a habit i just can not break!

I'm a nursery attendant at a church and not only do I have to dress modest for church, but I also have to dress functionally so I can wrangle up all the youngins. A few weekends ago I visited the new H&M in Kansas City. It was super packed (I hate crowds) but I'm glad I trudged through it because I ended up with some really cool and, most importantly, cheap items! H&M may be my new favorite store actually..

Earlier tonight I took part in a Salvation Army "design challenge" for the African Student Association at my school! We were given a budget of $30 and sent to the Salvation Army to find outfits with African influences. I didn't win, which was fine because everyone had great outfits...........but I was so confused by the winner. Their designs were really good, but there was no hint of African influence which just baffled me and everyone else haha, but it was still fun!

Sorry I've been a bad blogger and haven't been posting about anything in the longest time, school just has a way of devouring all of my free time. Regular posts will resume soon I promise! Oh yeah....I'll be having a giveaway soon! Well, whenever the prize arrives so I can take pictures of it.

In the meantime, I made a video about something that's near and dear to my heart: bullying. As a black nerd (haha) I've pretty much been bullied for the majority of my life...it happens. But lately I've been disturbed by the amount of bullying that I've encountered as of recent. The reason I'm so disturbed? I'm 20 years old! Everyone around me is over 18, and very few people act like it. Around here, some like to bring people down for sport and that's never been cool with me. So I just had to get this off my chest:

I have a question for anyone who reads this blog:

Do you tend to find inspiration from people who look like you?

I'm just up for no reason scouring my usual blogs and I realized most of the blogs that I read are either run by a black person or cater to black people in general.

And even with blogs that don't have black people as their target audience, I still find myself more drawn to the photos of people who look like me. The thing is, I know it doesn't matter. Outfits are outfits and clothes are clothes, but there's something about seeing people of color rocking those outfits stands out to me. Maybe this all goes back to the whole "black nerd thing". I know that I'm expected to dress a certain way, so seeing black people who dress like me (or even those who don't dress like me but still don't fall into the stereotype) is kind of refreshing? I don't know...it's like 4 in the morning ha.

...And that's not an exaggeration! I know it's childish, but apart from Misfits I only watch children's television. My favorite is Regular Show, I'm just a big kid!

My top and shorts come courtesy of my giant blue scissors. The top is actually from a dress I bought on sale at Urban Outfitters. It was falling apart anyway and the skirt is still wearable too so I basically got two pieces for the price of one!

My shorts were slacks before I cut the bottom half off. I loved the color, but the shape of the pants were so awkward..they were like flared boot cut or something. Anyway, I like them better now!

Don't get me wrong, thrifting is great!

For the short time that I visited the local Salvation Army, I was so happy with not only the prices of the pieces I was finding, but also the quality and uniqueness. Unfortunately my happiness was cut short by a not so professional employee who insisted on taking camera phone pictures of me every time I went in.

It creeped me out!

I know it wasn't my outfits because they had no AC and I only wore a t-shirt and jeans...maybe it was my hair? Either way, taking my picture more than once is unnecessary, and snickering while doing it is immature...especially for a woman who looked well over 30.

Anyway, it's been about a month since the "incidents" and I'm running low on money so I definitely have to go back! And if the lady appears again let's hope I have the courage to call her out this time...

This dress is just perfect! It's lace, with a high collar, and a defined waist...so basically it's everything I wanted!! The price sucks. Way too expensive for the material, but I had to have it.

First, I'd like to apologize to the people who are waiting on bow ties...I honestly think about it every day, I feel so bad but I'm so so busy. This is exactly why I don't accept payment until I'm ready to send them! After these few that I have left I'm not making any more. I'm actually losing money making custom ties, rather than making them at my leisure and selling what I have. Because with each tie, I have to buy new fabric and a new strap..I am just not business savvy haha

Secondly, class has started. It's my second day and I'm going to be on campus from 11am to 9pm *sighh*. I'm still excited for my classes though! Oh and my apartment is a mess, well, my rooms a mess. I'm still living out of boxes (I found my hair brush today, yay!) and I spend more time at Walmart buying things for my room then I actually spend in my room. I can't wait to finally get settled in.

Style Revamp

While I admire Janelle Monae's style, I decided very recently (today) that I need to dress more modest and feminine. Not that I've ever dressed like an ashawo or a man, I just felt like my wardrobe needed more lace, floral, frills, skirts, and polka dots! So I hit up the mall today and bought a ton of stuff with these rules in mind:

1. High waist/ defined waist

Belts at the waist, dresses that flair at the waist, and high waisted bottoms define your curves...and if you don't have much, it gives the illusion of an hour glass figure!

2. High Collars

There was a time when I thought cleavage was necessary, because I'm pretty short and I look really young, so it "made me look my age". But you can still look grown without them peeking out! Plus, no matter what a high collar always looks classy.

3. Knee highs/Thigh highs/Tights

I've always loved the look of thigh high socks...they're so cute! Besides that, it's a way to cover up when you feel like you're showing too much skin.

4. Pale Colors/Loose-fitting tops

These tops look so soft and feminine! While Janelle Monae (who made Vanity Fair's best dressed list!) wears black and white oh so well, I admit it can look harsh on me. Lighter colors fit me better!

"Basically when you first get the wig you'll be like what the hell haha, but here's what you do: 1. Sprinkle baby powder on it (reduces shine) 2. Brush/comb it/shake the baby powder out 3. Put it on someone else's head (or your own) and cut it down 4. Since you're transitioning, blending shouldn't be much of a problemAlso, youtube vids helped a lot! Ha don't worry I won't type like that the whole time! The last time I went to an antique mall was in my college town. Now that I'm temporarily back in my hometown, I decided to take my siblings to the local antique mall (A Legacy) and see what they had there. This time I took my camera!
